Scott Adams was born in Windham, N.Y., in 1957. He grew up a big fan of Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comics, and started drawing his own comics at the age of six. He graduated valedictorian at Windham Central School in 1975, with a class size of 39. He attended nearby Hartwick College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979. In his senior year, a vehicle breakdown forced him to most spend a night in the snow, causing him to vow never to see a snowflake again. He took a one-way trip to California a few months after his graduation and has lived in the Golden State ever since. Adams began working on Dilbert in his spare time while employed by Pacific Bell, and the comic was first syndicated in 1989.

Adams won both the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year and Best Newspaper Comic Strip of 1997. There have been over 30 Dilbert reprint books published, with total book and calendar sales topping 20 million units. In addition, all of Adams' business books from HarperCollins have been New York Times best-sellers. "The Dilbert Principle," Adams' first full-length hardcover book, has sold more than 1.5 million copies, making it categorically the best-selling business book of all time. In 1999, UPN and Columbia TriStar Television brought an animated Dilbert series to primetime television. Adams is also an entrepreneur, producer, nonfiction author, restaurant owner, and certified hypnotist.
