Lincoln Peirce

Aspiring cartoonist Nate Wright is the star of Big Nate, the daily and Sunday comic strip distributed by NEA since 1991. Nate is 11 years old, four-and-a-half feet tall, and the all-time record holder for detentions in school history. He’s a self-described genius and sixth grade Renaissance Man. Nate, who lives with his dad and older sister, enjoys pestering his family and teachers with his sarcasm. To draw Big Nate, Peirce relies on memories of his own childhood and the experiences he collected teaching art at a New York City high school. Peirce occasionally turns his pen over to his creation, and readers get to see life through Nate’s eyes as he doodles his adventures in his notebook. The Big Nate book collections include I Smell a Pop Quiz: A Big Nate Book, Add More Babes!, and three e-books from ipicturebooks.com: Big Nate Makes a Splash (the Sunday Strips), Pray for a Fire Drill and Dibs on This Chair. Born in Iowa, Peirce grew up in New Hampshire and began creating his own comic strips in the sixth grade. He has also created animated shorts for the Cartoon Network. Peirce holds an M.F.A. from Brooklyn College and a B.A. in Art from Colby College, where he created a comic called “Third Floor.” He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

Meet the Cast of Big Nate

Bignate_150
Nate Wright Nate Wright: A wisecracking 11-year-old who thinks he’s destined for greatness, Nate is the star of Big Nate, the daily and Sunday comic strip that made its debut in 1991. Nate’s a sixth grade Renaissance Man, a self-described genius, and the all-time record holder for detentions in school history. He’s often in hot water with his teachers and classmates, but Nate’s winning personality and can-do attitude always make him a big hit with readers.
Frances_150
Francis He’s Nate’s best friend, and also his polar opposite. The quiet, studious Francis is an honor roll student, trivia buff, and certified neat freak. He’s level-headed, which means that he often plays the role of Nate’s conscious. He and Nate sometimes clash, but Francis is patient, understanding, and very loyal. His friendship with Nate trumps whatever differences might exist between the two of them.
Teddy
Teddy Teddy’s the third musketeer, but never a third wheel. He’s a fun-loving jokester who’s always ready for anything -- even some of Nate’s most hair-brained schemes. And only Teddy’s a match for Nate in the ultimate middle school put-down battle, the Yo Mama Smackdown.
Artur
Artur A gentle and kind-hearted exchange student, Artur is loved by all -- except for Nate, who can’t stand the fact that Artur is just a tiny bit better than Nate at just about everything. Nate doesn’t dislike Artur; he just resents his successes. As Nate says: “Even I like Artur…and I can’t stand the guy!”
Gina
Gina Abrasive, arrogant, and a first-class workaholic, Gina’s the ultimate teacher’s pet. She boasts of her own academic achievements and delights in Nate’s failures. The two of them share an oil-and-water relationship, but may be more alike than either of them would care to admit.
Jenny
Jenny She’s been the apple of Nate’s eye since kindergarten, but Jenny doesn’t share Nate’s feelings. She only has eyes for Artur, and find’s Nate’s insistence that they’re destined to be together a little obnoxious.
Mrs_godfrey
Mrs. Godfrey Nate’s social studies teacher and arch nemesis. He constantly antagonizes her -- sometimes intentionally, sometimes not -- and she responds in kind. Beneath Mrs. Godfrey’s harsh exterior is…an even harsher INterior.
Mr. Rosa P.S. 38’s longtime art teacher is overwhelmed on good days, and burned out on bad days. He’s sometimes exasperated by Nate’s antics in the art studio, but he always manages to stay positive -- even as he counts the days until his retirement.
Chad2
Chad He’s unassuming, sweet-natured, and easily confused. Chad’s the shortest kid in the sixth grade, but he’s got a big heart and -- thanks to his various food obsessions -- a big appetite.
