Maggie Gallagher and Universal Uclick Announce The Retirement of Gallagher’s Column
Seventeen-year columnist’s final column will appear on January 2.
Kansas City, Mo. (January 2, 2013) -- Universal Uclick and Maggie Gallagher announce the retirement of syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher’s column. Gallagher’s final column will be posted online and published in newspapers on Wednesday, January 2.
Gallagher has been a nationally syndicated columnist for over 17 years; Universal Uclick launched her first column in June of 1995. She began publishing a column twice a week, but for the last three years has written a column once a week. Maggie is particularly known for writing about life, sex, babies, marriage, and culture--culture war topics but with a civility and grace that seeks to explain, not denounce.
Universal picked up Maggie’s column after she spent a year as a columnist (alternating with Rich Vigilante) for the now-defunct Manhattan edition of New York Newsday.
Gallagher has served as an editor at National Review, director of the marriage program at the Institute for American Values, founder of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy, and founder of the National Organization for Marriage, which The Washington Post called the “pre-eminent national organization” fighting to protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
She is the author of four books on marriage: "The Case for Marriage" (with University of Chicago professor Linda J. Waite), "Debating Same-Sex Marriage" (with professor John Corvino), "The Abolition of Marriage: How We Destroy Lasting Love" and "Enemies of Eros: How the Sexual Revolution is Killing Family, Marriage and Sex."
“When I first began this wonderful journey as a syndicated columnist, Sydney Callahan wrote to me to say, ‘This won’t be forever, at some point you will start writing columns about your kittens, and you know it will be time to stop,” said Gallagher. “I haven’t yet reached the kitten-inspiration point, but I felt it was time to end on a high note -- in particular to give myself time to write in longer format, to experiment with creative projects, and to use new media to reach my audience on a personal basis.
“There is no syndicate that values creative talent more than Universal,” Gallagher continued. “I want to thank the McMeel and Andrews families, and especially Lee Salem and my editors over 17 years, Lisa Tarry and Clint Hooker. You’ve been wonderful to me and I’m very grateful. I'd also like to once again thank the late William F. Buckley Jr., who launched a lot of writers, including me.”
Maggie Gallagher is a fellow at the American Principles Project, where she writes a weekly newsletter, and she blogs at MaggieGallagher.com. Her columns are archived at Uexpress.com.
