He went on to represent the U.S. in the World Bridge Championships, was the non-playing captain of a U.S. bronze medal-winning team in the World Women's Team Championship for the McConnell Cup, and has won other titles in both England and the U.S.
Alder has also won a Royal Viking Article of the Year award; an award and special commendation for his NEA bridge columns from The American Bridge Teachers' Association; and an award for writing up the best Defensive Deal of the Year from The International Bridge Press Association.
Phillip Alder

Phillip Alder, bridge champion, coach, author and teacher writes Newspaper Enterprise Association's internationally syndicated bridge column. A native of London, England, Alder won his first bridge championship in 1971. He went on to represent the U.S. in the World Bridge Championships, was the non-playing captain of a U.S. bronze medal-winning team in the World Women's Team Championship for the McConnell Cup, and has won other titles in both England and the U.S. Alder has also won a Royal Viking Article of the Year award; an award and special commendation for his NEA bridge columns from The American Bridge Teachers' Association; and an award for writing up the best Defensive Deal of the Year from The International Bridge Press Association.
As a bridge teacher, Alder has conducted many classes in the New York area, and bridge holidays in Switzerland, Majorca, Malta and England. He currently teaches fall and spring bridge classes in Florida. In the spring and summer, Alder teaches classes in New York and Connecticut. When not playing or coaching bridge, Alder is often writing about it. He is associate editor of The Bridge World, was previously editor of Bridge Magazine, and contributes articles to bridge publications in several countries. He has also co-authored several books with Dr. George Rosenkranz, including Godfrey's Angels (2001) and Bid to Win, Play for Pleasure (Devyn Press, 1990). Alder's other books include Get Smarter at Bridge (1994); the expanded Casino Games section in the revised Hoyle's Complete Book of Games (Doubleday, 1991); the revised On Bidding (Simon & Schuster, 1990) with Alan Truscott; and You Can Play Bridge (Thames Methuen, 1983), which was the only bridge book ever offered by The Book Club in England at that time.
